A 24/7 permit portal is coming. Does that mean no more trips to Yulee?

Nassau County says a new online system opens Monday, October 12. The owner-builder instructions on its current Building Department page still call for an in-person signature.

Why it matters

Residents and contractors may soon be able to submit and track applications outside office hours. Owner-builders should check the county’s current instructions before assuming the full process can be completed from home.

Nassau County announced October 6 that a new Accela permitting portal will be available starting Monday, October 12. The county says users will be able to apply, pay, track applications, schedule inspections and print approved documents online. As of this story’s October 9 publication, that announced start date is still in the future.

The county Building Department page says it issues permits and performs plan review and inspections in unincorporated Nassau County. It also currently says owner-builders applying under the contractor license exemption must personally appear and sign the building permit application at the office, listed at 96161 Nassau Place in Yulee.

The announcement does not explain whether that owner-builder instruction will change when the portal launches. We have not confirmed an exception, a virtual alternative, or a new rule. The sensible step for an owner-builder is to check the county’s latest guidance before submitting.

What remains unanswered

The county lists the Building Department’s phone number as 904-530-6250. Fernandina Beach city permits are outside the county department’s stated unincorporated service area.

The question in the headline remains open. The October 12 date and portal features are county announcements, not a claim that the new portal is already operating. Send a correction through our corrections page.
